Nephew triumphs at music awards

Rock band Nephew was Saturday's winner at the Danish Music Awards

By The Copenhagen Post

Danish rock band Nephew stole the show at Saturday's Danish Music Awards, winning all the five categories in which it was nominated.

The band's strong performance rounds out a year in which they saw their second album, USADSB, debut at number one on the Danish charts in August and go platinum in November. The group has previously received awards for their efforts in 2004 and released USADSB in Japan.

Nephew won Danish Music Awards, the country's highest music award, for: Album of the Year; Rock Album of the Year; Song of the Year; Group of the Year; and Video of the Year.

The past year's critical and commercial success reinforces Nephew's status as heir to the throne in Danish rock and the latest in a line of successful Danish bands that includes names such as Gasolin', Sort Sol, and D.A.D.

Nephew lead singer Simon Kvamm nearly took home a sixth award, but instead saw his comedy troupe, The Boys from Angora, beaten out by Burhan G in the Best New Act competition.

Also winning awards on Saturday were Swan Lee's lead singer Pernille Rosendahl, who won for Female Singer of the Year, and Claus Hempel, who was named as Male Singer of the Year.

In addition to honouring their own, the Danish Music Awards also recognises the best of foreign music. This year's top honours were awarded to Scottish band Franz Ferdninand, who won the awards for Best New Foreign Band and whose `Take me out' was named as Foreign Song of the Year.
