Jazz Festival makes record sales

This year's Jazz Festival has sold more tickets than ever, and most of the big name concerts are already sold out

By The Copenhagen Post

When Copenhagen's 28th Jazz Festival opens Friday at noon on Nytorv Square, it can already boast of being a success - based on ticket sales, at least. The public has been quick to respond to the big names on offer and have bought 7000 advance tickets.

It was hardly surprising that the festival's opening night concert at the Royal Opera House, with the legendary US pianist Herbie Hancock set to perform, would sell out. But the city's jazz fans have also managed to devour every single ticket to see Trio Beyond, which features veteran jazz guitarist John Scofield, when the band plays at the old Politiken printworks, 'Pressen', tomorrow.

Gone, too, are all tickets for the experimental French electronic group Gotan Project, due to play the Opera House on Thursday, and for 80 year-old Danish jazz violinist Svend Asmussen's concert at Tivoli's Glassalen on Saturday, 15 July.

Those who've not yet managed to purchase tickets to the big events over the next 10 days should do so quickly, then: there are still a handful of seats left to see Brazilian sensation Sergio Mendes tomorrow at Tivoli, or African star Salif Keita at the Opera House next weekend.

Tickets are not needed, however, for the free open air concerts, which kick off today in Nytorv Square at midday. Opening the concert is pianist Fabian Kallerdahl, who has already been selected as 2006's Swedish jazz artist of the year.
