Dennis Rommedahl last night received the Danish Football Association’s Player of the Year award.

The Olympiakos winger has been heavily criticised by fans and football experts alike, but after his performance in the World Cup in South Africa, he has regained his popularity.

The award was voted for by fans through text messages and votes on TV2’s website – and that was particularly pleasing to Rommedahl.

“I am incredibly proud of receiving the award from the fans,” he told Ekstra Bladet newspaper. “They have been critical of me in the past, but in football it’s all ups and downs. Right now it’s up, and I’m very happy”.

Other nominees included Nicklas Bendtner, Daniel Agger and Simon Kjær.

The 32-year-old winger earlier this year became only the sixth player to reach 100 caps for Denmark.
