Libya’s top-ranking diplomat in Denmark has been asked to leave the country by Wednesday after continued expressions of support for strongman Muammar Gaddafi.
According to the Foreign Ministry, consul general Muner Eldawani, was declared ‘persona non grata’ after “repeatedly and publicly” expressing support for Gaddafi.
Libya does not have an embassy in Denmark, but as the head of the country’s consulate, Eldawani has been its representative here since 2008.
The two other members of the consulate’s staff have not been expelled.
Speaking with Berlingske newspaper, Lene Espersen, the foreign minister, said the move was drastic, but pointed out that Libyan diplomats in other countries had also been expelled for supporting Gaddafi.
Espersen underscored that expelling Eldawani was not the same as breaking off diplomatic relations, but said the move “sent a signal to Gaddafi that brutalising the Libyan people has consequences”.
The move is the first time since 1976 that the Foreign Ministry has expelled a diplomat from the country. At that time, North Korean diplomats were ordered out after it was revealed they had smuggled alcohol and drugs into the country.
