Denmark has defied underdog expectations to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship as group winners with one game to spare. The achievement means that Denmark will participate in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which starts in Mexico on June 18.
A 2-0 win over a highly-fancied England team on Friday, which followed a 3-2 opening victory over hosts Serbia on Tuesday, renders the result of Denmark’s game against France tonight meaningless. Denmark will play either Germany, Romania or the Czech Republic in the semis on Thursday, with the final planned for Sunday.
Denmark’s key player so far has been Viktor Fischer, a young forward who recently signed for Dutch club Ajax from FC Midtjylland. He scored the winner against Serbia and the opener against England.
“The mood is fantastic,” Fischer told uefa.com. “It's an honour to be in the semi-finals and in the World Cup; we never expected that – we believed it – but never expected it. We have a lot of confidence now and I think there's still a lot to come. We can get even better.”
