US Ambassador to Denmark Laurie Fulton today condemned the WikiLeaks releases, calling the publication of confidential US cables “dishonest, illegal, dangerous” and saying they put “real people at risk”.
In a press release, Fulton also underscored the importance of “the ability of diplomats to provide honest reports and assessments to their foreign ministries is fundamental”, and praised embassy employees for their professionalism.
Fulton also said she was confident that relations between Denmark and the US would not be affected by the release.
An embassy spokesperson told The Copenhagen Post that Fulton’s comments had not been made in the anticipation that of any of the documents could strain relations between the US and Denmark.
Some 297 cables from Copenhagen are due to be released by WikiLeaks. It is not known what the subject of the cables are, but on Tuesday former ambassador James P Cain told a North Carolina TV station that they likely included cables from his desk focusing on the Danish military effort in Afghanistan and profiles of young political leaders.
