Crown Prince Frederik returned recently from a secret trip to visit Danish troops deployed to Afghanistan, it was announced yesterday.
The prince was in Helmand Province, accompanied by Lene Espersen, the foreign minister, and Gitte Lillelund Bech, the defence minister.
The heir to the throne, himself a Navy frogman and Air Force pilot, met with soldiers and talked to them about their experiences, before commenting: “I am proud of the efforts of the Danish soldiers, and for the courage they display every day.”
This is the second time that the prince has made a visit to Afghanistan, where Danish troops have been stationed since Denmark joined the US-led coalition in 2002. He first visited in 2008.
In a press release from the foreign ministry, Lene Espersen said: “The visit to Helmand was a very welcome opportunity to discuss the situation there as well as the civilian and military efforts on the ground.”
