New Danish records set at European meet

Jakob Andkjær has been Denmark's success story at this year's European Swimming Championships in Hungary.

With a bronze medal in the 50-metre butterfly, the 21-year old swimmer from Vallensbæk, just south of Copenhagen, broke his own Danish record, for the second time. Again in the 100-metre freestyle, Andkjær set a new Danish record, his third the year.

His departure to the 28th European championship was otherwise shrouded in scepticism. The young Dane, who attends Auburn University in Alabama, had not geared training toward the European meet, but several US varsity meets, reported daily newspaper Politiken.

'I'm incredibly happy with my result,' Andkjær told public service broadcaster DR. 'I had hoped to medal, but hadn't expected it when I left for the championship. My goal was to advance to the finals.'

Andkjær's solid training background from the elite training centre in Farum, northwest of Copenhagen, combined with his experience in US pools, however, served the swimmer well.

In January, Andkjær had already broken the previous record of 50.78 seconds set by Franz Mortensen in 1998, whittling it down to 50.49 seconds. Andkjær's goal heading into the competition was to be the first Dane to finish the 100-metre freestyle under 50 seconds, which he missed by just eight-one-hundredths of a second.

Andkjær advanced to the semi-finals in the 100-metre freestyle. He is also swimming in the 100 metre butterfly, which takes place on Friday, and dives into the pool again on Saturday for the men's 50-metre freestyle.

The last Danish man to win a medal at the European Championships was Lars Sørensen who won a gold medal in 1991. Sørensen is now head of elite athletes for the Danish Swimming Union.
