Teamwork brings evacuees home
As a humanitarian crisis grips southern Lebanon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes status of its evacuation efforts
The last planeloads of Danish citizens evacuated from Lebanon arrived early Friday morning.
In the largest evacuation programme since the Second World War, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully transported some 5000 people from Lebanon to Damascus and Cypress.
The International Operative Staff charged with coordinating the evacuation worked around the clock with police, the Danish navy, hospitals and private organisations such as Euro-Alarm.
With about 40 percent of the evacuees under the age of 18 years, concerns grew about how the evacuation would affect children, said Henrik Nielsen, the head of the medical department at Euro-Alarm, which helped to provide assistance in the operation.
