Oil spill mars west coast beach
Beach guests along the southern west coast have been hindered from bathing due to oil pollution drifting up on beach
Its high season for relaxing by the seaside but a section of beach along Denmark's west coast has been plagued by oil pollution this summer.
Blåbjerg Municipality in southern Jutland has had to clean the nearby beach twice this month to remove oil. Meanwhile, neighbouring Blåvandshuk municipality has also had to rid their beach of oil pollution washing ashore. Civil servants from the municipality prepared themselves to clean-up again on Tuesday.
Clean-up of the popular bathing spot began on Wednesday morning, said Jens O. Larsen, technical manager, of Blåvandshuk Municipality. The oil is collecting at the water's edge, stretching down the entire beach.
'We couldn't start clean-up yesterday because there were too many people on the beach,' said Larsen. 'People have to walk through it when they enter the water, and that isn't very enjoyable.'
The source of the oil is an old spill that has been dormant on the sea floor and is now beginng to rise to the surface.
Clean-up with a machine designed to clean beaches will be ongoing most of Wednesday, but by midday Larsen said beach guests would be able to use parts of the beach again.
