Woman arrested for parliament terror threat

A 35-year-old woman has been arrested for sending a letter containing white powder to the State Ministry. The powder proved harmless.

Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman for sending a letter containing white powder to Denmark´s State Ministry on Monday. The parliamentary building, Christiansborg, was closed off for hours after the letter was discovered.

"She turned herself in to a police station in Zealand, and said she had sent the letter," the police told Danish radio news channel DR.

Police said previously on Tuesday they had narrowed their investigation down to one suspect.

The woman will be charged with an attempt to harm other people with "harmful gasses," and could face up to 12 years in prison.

"She is charged according to this paragraph to emphasize the serious nature of the case," the police said, adding that the woman was also charged with life threats.

The powder turned out to be harmless, after it was diagnosed for anthrax, other dangerous biological material and poison in a highly secured Stockholm laboratory. The laboratory concluded it could be a sugar substance.

The powder letter is considered the first terrorist threat against Christiansborg.

Christiansborg was closed off for hours on Monday. Six employees were not allowed to leave the building until they had taken a bath and dressed in new clothes, as they were believed to have come into contact with the powder.

However, the scare did not affect Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who worked from home on Monday.
