Ombudsman blasts Greenland's prison conditions
The parliamentary ombudsman has called the conditions in detention cells and prisons in Greenland 'extremely' objectionable A man was held on remand in an unfurnished detention cell in Greenland last year with the light left turned on for 74 days....
The Danish parliamentary ombudsman released the details of the man's holding conditions in a statement today at the culmination of his investigation into the incident.
The ombudsman inspected detention centres and prisons in Greenland last August and has now introduced several initiatives to prevent poor conditions, which go against the Greenland police commissioner's own regulations.
Many of Greenland's prisons are overstretched, resulting in people being housed in detention centres - rooms designed to accommodate those who police feel need to sleep off a night of heavy drinking.
