Teachers call for Danish film curriculum
Danish schoolteachers are calling for a list of seminal Danish films to be used in public school instruction. Education Minister Ulla Tørnæs is encouraging teachers to glean inspiration from film industry professionals
The chairman of the Danish Teachers' Association, Jens Raahauge, says public schoolchildren in this country should become better acquainted with the Danish film heritage.
"A list of the most important Danish films - a film canon, of sorts - would mean that these films became accessible, that educational materials were produced for them, and that they were given a place in the regular school curriculum," said Raauhauge, adding that the film list would not be a mandatory component of the public school curriculum.
Social Democrat party education spokeswoman Pernille Blach Hansen told Jyllands-Posten that a list of suggested Danish films for class viewing was "a fine idea." Danish People's Party education spokeswoman Louise Frevert also welcomed the initiative.
"It would be fantastic to give young people a sense of the chronological order and development in Danish film," said Frevert.
