Drunk pedestrians also a safety hazard

Walking under the influence: one of out every five people killed in alcohol-related accidents in this country is a pedestrian

Daily newspaper URBAN reported today that of the 105 people killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2003, 20 were pedestrians. Police registered 116 serious injuries stemming from collisions with intoxicated pedestrians, but the actual number is likely five times as high.

The National Council for Greater Traffic Safety has also noted the hazard posed by drunken pedestrians.

"We are pleased about the general decline in fatalities and injuries, but there is still that group of inebriated pedestrians that end up getting run over because they do stupid things like walk out in front of cars or lay down to sleep in the middle of the road," said the council's director, René La Cour Sell, speaking with URBAN today.
